Cold Wind! Gloves!

We've had a cold, blustery few days recently.  The temperature has been in the 30's, but the wind chill in the 20's.  I realize this isn't that cold, but my hands get cold really easily, so for me, this blustery wind has meant I needed to dig out the warm gloves. 

I love these gloves for several reasons, in no particular order:
  • They are gloves, but you can pull the mitten shield out of that little pocket on the back of the hand and that shield makes all the difference in the wind. 
  • There are slits in the index fingers and thumbs that allow you to use your phone or whatever (I don't carry my phone when I run, but if I did, this would be important). 
  • A little clip by the wrist holds the two gloves together when I wash them or throw them in the drawer -- no more losing one!
  • The wrist coverage is longer than my other gloves without being too long.  Just right.
  • They came with a blinky light!   I forgot to put it in the picture, but it recharges with a USB, and it clips onto a slit on the glove or you can put it on your shirt or wherever! 
I have basic knit gloves for my sort-of cold days, but these Saucony glove/mittens have become my new best friend on the colder, windy days we've been having!

Working Out My Day

Some days, like today, I'm so tired when I get home from work that all I want to do is put comfy clothes on and crash. It's days like today - right now, actually - that I have to dig deep to get out the door for my run. I want to run.  I want to breathe in the crisp, fresh air and soak up the bright sunshine. But I'm so sleepy.

What do I do?  Sometimes I plan ahead and run before work, but since I have to go to work so early, and I'm powered by the sun, I don't run before work much since it's dark out at that time. Sometimes I take a quick power nap before heading out. And sometimes I picture somewhere like this

and think about running there, rather than around my own town again. Or I picture running a different route that I haven't done in a while.

Generally, working out isn't something I struggle to work into my day. Most days, I figure out when I'll run, or bike, or swim, or go to yoga. Then I set the rest of the day around that. Most days, the working out part isn't something I have a hard time working out.

 But some days, the getting out there takes a little extra push.

 Ok...  I'm going now, I'm going...

Keep Moving!

I mean, really, I was only on Winter Break for a week+, but I got super good at sleeping in (till 7!).  The past two mornings have been tough.  I was so off kilter yesterday that I forgot to take my water bottle to work.  I also didn't have my spare in my desk -- AGH!-- so I had to take a whole bunch of trips to the office all day long to refill my cup at the water cooler.  Annoying. No good stories heard while there. 

So, to keep me moving today, I loaded up on the coffee (ok, it's really half-caff  --  full caffeine makes me too jittery at work), and I made sure I had my water bottle.
And, unlike yesterday, I didn't feel like I needed a nap by second period. 

Ok, that happened around 4th period today. 

But after work (school) I had my fun job to go to, so that carried me through the afternoon.  I headed to the running store right after school and was greeted with these fun new shoes:

These are the zero drop, minimal shoe from my favorite running shoe company.  I generally run in the Ravenna.  I'm not a zero-drop runner, but these shoes were pretty comfortable to wear while walking around during work today!  And the brilliant blue color was super cool.  My feet looked happy, and that helped to keep me moving until we closed tonight. 

Other than my situps and pushups this morning, today was a rest day.  I definitely didn't rest, though -- it was a day that started at 5:15 and kept me moving with work until after 7pm!

Om

One of the things I let slide after breaking my elbow was my yoga practice.  I really couldn't even do a solid push up until late August, but by the fall I kept thinking I need to get back to yoga.  I went to a community class at the yoga studio last week, and tonight I returned to the class my favorite instructor teaches. 

The room was about 95* and within minutes I was sweating.  A sharp contrast from my run this afternoon in the 30* cold outside, but I love it.  I love the meditative practice of vinyasa flow power yoga.  I love pushing myself and my body to stretch and strengthen in a way that I couldn't do on my own.  I love the feeling of working hard and dripping with sweat.  I love the peace of shavasana.  And this time of year, I love the invigorating wash of cold air as I step out of the hot studio after a fantastic class. 

I still need to work on the strength in my left arm, but yoga makes me better...  so I bought a new class card and I'm back in the practice.

Oh - and I got some delicious Kiwi frozen yogurt for dinner on the way home.  What?  It's non-fat, no sugar added vanilla, loaded with lots of strawberries and blueberries on top!  Healthy dinner!  (Yes, and a couple blocks of chocolate chip cookie dough.  Dessert!)

A New Year

I rang in the new year in the city with some good friends and some good bubbly. 
After some last-day-of-vacation-sleeping-in (I got really good at sleeping until 7am -- that 5:30 alarm clock is going to get tossed across the room tomorrow morning!) I threw on my ipod and set out for an easy run around town.  I lost my thoughts in the music and the crisp air and ended up with 8.5 miles.  It was fantastic.

I won't set any resolutions, but I'm hoping this year holds some new experiences and even some new people to better my world.  I'm going to try to find ways to better myself in the process.

Year in Review

JANUARY AND FEBRUARY-- just a whole bunch of running.  No racing.  Building up mileage to prep for NJ Marathon the first weekend in May.  I spent much of these months renovating my kitchen and living room.  (No pics of the living room yet!)

MARCH -- Ran a great 20 miler after work on Friday the 15th.  Saturday night, while walking the mile+ home from our store's anniversary party, I decided to take my heels off and jog home barefoot.  Stupid, yes, but I had to, um, pee.  So I jogged.  No big deal, I've done it before (see my 40th birthday post).  Thing is, I definitely jacked up my calf this time.  Realized it the next day.  Grr. 

Which leads me to the next weekend.  I flew to the Keys for a short weekend get-away and since I wasn't running on the hurt calf, I biked.  And crashed.  And broke my elbow.

Which was frustrating and annoying and sidelined me for a bit.  I did PT through APRIL and started running again, but despite getting a 20 miler in, I decided on marathon weekend in MAY to drop to the half marathon instead.  I had a horrible panic attack about running the full the day before the race.  Just felt unprepared and completely filled with anxiety about running 26.2 miles.  Stupid.  As it turns out, I was glad I only ran the HM that day.  It felt good to run a race well (not a PR, but not far off) and get back in the game.

JUNE rolled around and I finished the school year, although it was a busier time than usual -- after 13 years in the same classroom, I had to pack it all up and move to a different room in the building. 


Then at the end of the month, my mom and I headed west.  For the past few years, I've been taking trips in the summer to places I've never been.  This year was Colorado.  Despite the terrible wildfires, I took the Cog Railway to the top of Pike's Peak,




and I ran a 10k trail race at the Copper Mountain Resort.  At altitude.  Like, we started at about 9000' and climbed to over 11000'.  On a tough, technical trail.  Insane.  I almost dropped out after about 50 yards.  But I didn't, and I loved it, even though it was really hard.

Once home and into JULY, I was swimming a bit and biking a bit, but the elbow and arm still wasn't strong enough to do those comfortably.  I kept running and got some beach time and work time at the running store and lots of reading done. 

In AUGUST I decided to do a sprint tri, despite doing very little swimming and NO open water swimming at all.  My swim and bike could've been better, but I had a great run split.  It was fun to get back into the tri's.  I also ran a local 5 mile race that I've run several times, and this year I ran a PR.  Sweet!

As school started back up in SEPTEMBER, my running was going well and I was getting deep into marathon training.  I was registered for the NYC marathon -- as a 3x lottery reject -- and I wanted to just enjoy the day.  I told myself this was going to be a no-pressure (to PR) race day, and I threw out any training plan I was sort of following.  I started to just run to enjoy the run.  No paying attention to timing or pacing.  Just get out on the road or on the trail for my long runs, and enjoy it.  And I did! 

OCTOBER rolled in, and I turned another year older, and wondered when I'd find my Mr. Right...  (apparently, it's not yet...) SO, I kept running and training and working, and then the end of the month arrived, and so did

The devastation was immense, and while my parents' house was ok, our summer cottage, my brother's home and business, and his rental properties all sustained serious damages.  My parents moved in with me for 3 weeks while the electricity and gas supply to their home was cut off.  My brother and his family is still displaced, living in a neighbor's home, and working to rebuild their business. 

And in the midst of all that, the NYC marathon was cancelled (last minute) and I jumped into a spot for those displaced NYC runners in the Philadelphia Marathon.  I've run it twice before, but this was a year I felt I could PR.  Yes, my goal for NYC was to just have fun, but I'd been running well, and I was ready for a stronger race than I usually have...  And on NOVEMBER 18th, I ran an 11 minute PR

That was a sweet end to a good running year.  Earlier in the month I'd paced a friend in our local 10k Bridge Run, and that was a fun new experience.  I took about 8 days off from running after the marathon and let my legs and body recover, and as DECEMBER passed, I started easy running again and will end the year with about 1,880 miles -- which is not a PR, but considering my time off with my broken elbow, I'll take it! 

I've gotten better at listening to my body, my legs especially, this year -- and I've gotten better at running for the enjoyment of it, rather than constantly chasing an "important" (to whom, really?) time goal.  I ran in NJ, Florida, PA, and Colorado in 2012...

Finally!

And I finally did it well.

I was supposed to run the NYC Marathon this fall. I was a lottery reject and was finally granted registration this year. Sometime in late summer, I threw out any training plan I was trying to follow and just started running by feel. Enjoying the run. I became more comfortable at a faster pace. I giggled through almost all of my long runs because it felt so easy. I took in the nature around me, and I said hello to everyone I ran by. I was comfortable, I looked forward to my runs, and I was ready for NYC. No plan in mind, just enjoy the experience.

Then Sandy hit. Storm of a lifetime. And in the last minute, NYC was cancelled.
It should have been. While I was ready to run it if it was held, it didn't feel right. I was disappointed but a little relieved when the cancellation was announced.

I took a few days, thought it all over, and despite feeling exhausted and super stressed from the effects Sandy had on my family, I decided to run the Philadelphia Marathon 2 weeks later. I was running well. This should have been my race to finally break that 4 hour mark and run a solid 26.2. I paid the $200 fee and made it official.

The morning after NYC was cancelled, the day before it was to happen, and 2 weeks out from Philly, I set out for an 18ish miler. I figured if things felt fine I'd go 20; if my exhausted body said otherwise, 16 would be enough. I went the 18, and though it wasn't as smooth as my other long runs had been, I still felt ready for a good race day.

I was doing this one alone. My sister decided not to run it, and while I'm resigned to the fact that she'll always be faster than me at the marathon distance, running this one without her in the race meant I didn't have to think about how far ahead of me she would be. A little less to think about. I didn't want to have any fan fare about this day -- I kept the mindset that I was just heading to Philly for a long run, just like I had done so many times before. Although it upset my mom, I was ok with her and my dad not being able to make it over to the race because of my dad's knee replacement surgery. I realized it was easing my mind to think of the race as a 4 hour run, rather than 26.2 miles. For some reason, that sounded less daunting. I had my chicken, potatoes, and beer for dinner, laid out all my gear, and headed to bed. I reminded myself I had run comfortably for 20+ miles several times at a pace that would allow me a big PR, AND an enjoyable run. I was ready for a good day.

Tried as I might, I still freaked out on race morning. Parking was an issue, which wasn't the norm for us, and I told my sister I felt like I was going to puke. My stomach was in knots as we waited in the car and then on the porta-potty line in the hour+ before the race start. I just needed the waiting to be over. I just needed to start running. Soon enough, Aimee was snapping my pre-race picture as I headed to the special corral for the first wave of NYC refugees. (Notice my own attempt to keep me focused on enjoying the day -- my Brooks "Run Happy" shirt!)
I was in NYC-1, which was to start just after the elites and first fast wave. There were special announcements about us, and although I have run this race twice before, and I'm not from NYC, I felt a huge wave of emotion roll over me as they welcomed us and then played "New York, New York" as we started across the line. And then I was fine.

I got in my groove, I ran comfortably, I took in the crowds, the people lining the streets, the many signs welcoming the NYC runners, and the perfect weather. The early miles ticked by and I saw my friend A by her block, and then another friend running the half. I kept my pace comfortable and a bit slower, and decided early to stay ahead of my fueling and drinking. Soon enough I was running up the hill to Drexel, remembering seeing my friend E there last year. Then I was coming up to the Zoo, into Fairmount Park, and then down toward the river. I was comfortable. I smiled. Everything I was doing was working. I saw another friend, C, on his bike.

I made my way up to the Art Museum circle, the 12.5 mile mark, and kept my eyes peeled for my sister. I found her right where I thought she'd be. As I ran past, she asked how I was.

"I'm good," I said.
"Want me to jump in with you for a bit?" she asked.
"Nah, I'm ok," I replied as I turned the corner and headed onto Kelly Drive -- a place I'd run so many times before. Just 13 to go, I thought -- less than 2 more hours -- I can totally do this!

And then, as I got to Boathouse Row, just past mile marker 13, my right hamstring seized up on me. I pulled up. I couldn't even walk. I almost buckled over it hurt so bad. WHAT THE HELL!!!

I hopped to the side of the road and tried to massage the muscles in my leg. I couldn't move it. Here I am, running so well, ready to finally have a sub-4 marathon, and I couldn't even walk. I glanced over to a girl on the sidewalk and seriously thought I'd ask to use her phone. I'd have to call Aimee and let her know I'd be dropping out. I didn't run Philly, I didn't pay $200 on top of all the money I'd paid for NYC, just to limp in another marathon time that was way slower than I should be doing. I was pissed, and I was ready to quit.

And then I was pissed that I might have to quit. I was pissed that after all this, I wouldn't get the finish, let alone that sub-4. I was pissed. And somehow, after more than 2 and a half minutes on the sideline, I got my leg to move, and then walk, and then jog. And soon I was running again.

It hurt, it wasn't smooth, but somehow I kept going. I started looking for my fast friends that would soon be passing me on their way to the finish as I was heading out to Manyunk. I saw Matt, who ran his 2:39. I saw Colleen, who ran her 2:46. I was energized by seeing them. I was hurting, but I kept running. And I realized that if I just kept this pace -- slower than I'd like, but fast enough -- I'd still squeak in under that 4 hour mark.

I passed the beer table on the way into Manyunk and smiled, knowing I was feeling ok. I made the turn around at mile 20ish, and knew I was going to make it. Just keep this pace. As I climbed out of Manyunk and made my way back to Kelly Drive, I knew. Just keep moving. I was going to do it.

By the time I hit mile 25, my legs were feeling heavier, but I was still moving. No stopping, no muscle cramps, I was still moving. I was starting to get emotional as I made my way up through that final quarter mile of crowds. While you want the energy of all those spectators, it seems like that final quarter mile takes another 3 miles to get to the finish line. I knew I'd make the sub-4, and I was ready to be done, but I soaked it all in. I heard friends shout my name, and I waved. I caught Aimee's eye, and gave her a wave that meant, yup, I'm going to do it -- as my twin, she should be able to figure out that's what that wave meant, right?
I saw the finish line just ahead, saw my watch read 3:57, and thought,

FINALLY.

I got my medal and heat blanket, got some hot broth (best part of Philly's finish line!), and found my sister.
And then I sat down, because I just couldn't move my leg another step.
We sat there for a bit, caught up, and then headed home.

It was over.

I think I thought I'd be super excited about the sub-4. I think I felt like I'd have this huge wave of accomplishment swarm over me. Driving home, though, I just felt like I did something I knew was going to happen. I ran like I have been. The reality of it is, I could've done it faster.  I realized those 2.5 minutes at mile 13 were probably as important as the sub-4 itself. I didn't let myself quit. I had a good day, despite a bump in the road. Despite the stupid pre-race nerves. The swarm of accomplishment which never happened, was replaced by a swarm of confidence. I can run 26.2 in under 4 hours, like I've trained to do so many times. I don't need to feel intimidated by the race itself, or the 26.2 distance. I can do it, I can do it solidly, and I can even do it when the day isn't perfect.

Finally, I know I can do it.
